There was a time when Georges St-Pierre was considered by some as the greatest fighter on the planet, but as he gets set to make his return tonight at UFC 217, the star says Demetrious Johnson holds that title.
At a recent media event in Toronto to promote his bout tonight with Michael Bisping, GSP was asked who he thinks is the best fighter on earth today, and the Canadian said this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“He’s the best fighter of our era right now,” St-Pierre said. “I believe he’s the best pound-for-pound right now. Every era has great fighters, some guys were the best at their time and you never fight the same fighter twice because a lot of things make people change. But right now as we’re speaking, the best pound-for-pound is Demetrious Johnson, no doubt.”
Yup. Pretty hard to argue with that. After all, we’re talking about a guy who has defended the flyweight title a record 11 times, and is ridiculously talented in every range of combat. Jon Jones gets mentioned quite often as well, but, due to his issues with USADA, more people seem to be leaning towards Johnson these days.
