Leading up to UFC 217 there was a lot of discussion and debate as to whether UFC 217 would move a lot of pay-per-view buys. Since Georges St-Pierre hadn’t fought since 2013, there were questions as to whether he remained a big draw, and further, some wondered whether the card’s other title fights would move PPV sales too.
Well, following Saturday’s mind blowing event in New York City, Dana White had this to say about the card’s PPV buys (quotes via MMA Mania):
“I told some of you guys this yesterday. Mayweather vs McGregor had the record in Canada, and we were number two and three. I’m pretty sure this beat Mayweather in McGregor tonight,”
“I told you that this would do a million buys, I was way wrong it did over a million, I’ll have a definite answer tomorrow, but it’s looking like we destroyed it.”
There you have it. Even if the card sold 1 million PPV buys, it would be considered a huge success, especially in a year where Conor McGregor hasn’t thrown hands in the Octagon.
