Recently the MMA world was buzzed by a report that Dana White was planning to have Darren Till and Stephen Thompson throw down, but the latter’s coach and father says that fight isn’t happening anytime soon.
Following Till’s impressive win over Donald Cerrone last month, the rising British star named Thompson as someone he’d like to battle. Since both men are ridiculously talented strikers, it sounds like quite the match-up right? Especially now that Thompson defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217?
Well, recently Thompson’s father and coach, Ray Thompson, told MMA Fighting that no has talked to them about a scrap with Till. In addition, here’s some of what else Thompson had to say:
“We’ve talked to no one [about fighting Till]. Not sure how this is a ‘done deal.’ As for Till, he needs to fight through the murderers row at welterweight like ‘Wonderboy’ did to get to the top…
“…Till needs to fight his way up just like ‘Wonderboy’ did. When he takes out the Jake Ellenbergers, Johny Hendricks’, Robert Whittakers, Rory MacDonalds and so on, we can talk about fighting.”
When you consider Thompson is ranked #2 in the welterweight division, and Till is #8, it’s not too surprising to hear this from “Wonderboy’s” camp. Thompson also relayed that his son might have two broken thumbs and ligament damage from UFC 217.
