Sage Northcutt Talks Future, UFC’s Lightweight Crown, Following Latest Win

Sage Northcutt isn’t calling for a title shot yet, but, following his latest win on Saturday, the 21 year-old’s reminding folks he’s undefeated in the UFC’s lightweight division.

Northcutt took on  Michel Quinones at UFC Fight Night 120, and worked his way to a unanimous decision victory. The bout marked the first time “Super” had fought in 2017, as Northcutt had yet to compete since he was submitted by Mickey Gall last December.

Well, after recording his ninth pro win, Northcutt had this to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I’m working my way up, one fight at a time,” Northcutt said. “I’m back down at lightweight, undefeated at lightweight, so that’s a blessing. I’ve been 4-0 as a lightweight. … Obviously in the future, I’m going to be looking forward to getting a belt and having Team Alpha Male there with me.”

“I am still a kid, 21 years old right now,” Northcutt added. “I was the youngest person in the UFC to come in and win their first fight in the UFC. … I’m still growing, still getting better as a fighter, too.”

Now sure, it’s not like Northcutt’s knocking on the title shot door, after all, he’s not even a top 15 ranked lightweight, in one of the UFC’s most stacked divisions. But, as he reported, it is worth noting that Northcutt’s losses have been at welterweight. In January, 2016, Northcutt was submitted by the always tough, Bryan Baberena.

So, when you consider that Northcutt’s no longer attending school and is focusing on fighting full time, and that he’s been training with the renowned Team Alpha Male, it’s going to be interesting to see where he goes from here. One thing’s for certain, there’s likely fewer people today questioning if Northcutt even belongs on the UFC roster.

That said, it will be fascinating to see if Northcutt can hang with an established, lightweight vet. The only man he’s faced in the UFC, with over 20 pro bouts, is Cody Pfister, who Northcutt submitted in 2015.

UFC Fight Night 120 took place in Norfolk, Virginia.
