Kelvin Gastelum is fighting Michael Bisping now at UFC Fight Night 122, instead of Anderson Silva, and he believes it’s provided him an even better opportunity to enhance his resume.
Gastelum was scheduled to battle Silva on November 25th in Shanghai, but the latter was handed a potential doping violation, and the Brazilian star will no longer compete. Although Michael Bisping is a former middleweight champ, and one of the UFC’s biggest names, some would argue that a win over him, wouldn’t match a victory over the legendary Silva.
But, during a recent media call, Gastelum said this (quote via MMA Mania):
“Mike is obviously the former champion, he’s highly ranked and his position in the UFC is very high, so this is a great move for my career.”
“He’s ranked No. 2, fresh off his title fight with (Georges St-Pierre),” Gastelum added. “I feel like this is an even better fight for my career and I expect it to be a tough fight.”
It’s an interesting argument. Bisping did defeat Silva last year, and his reign as middleweight champion only came to an end recently, while “The Spider’s” ended back in 2013. Further, as a result of this latest USADA flag, Silva is taking a lot of heat from fans and observers these days.
