UFC 218: Max Holloway Questions How Jose Aldo is More “Motivated” For Rematch

Jose Aldo has reportedly said that things are going to be different when he fights Max Holloway again, since he’s “motivated” for the bout. But, the new champion, Max Holloway, is questioning how that can be.

Aldo faced Holloway for the first time back in June, at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro, and was stopped in round three by the Hawaiian star. Holloway was supposed to fight Frankie Edgar in his first title defense on December 2nd, but due to an injury to the latter, Aldo’s been granted a rematch.

Well, during a media call on Tuesday, Aldo apparently said his second battle with Holloway is going to have a different result, since he’s “motivated” and “really focused”. In response, Holloway had this to say about the renowned, Brazilian fighter (quote via MMA Fighting):

“This guy is talking about motivation, how motivated he is for the belt,” Holloway said. “I have no idea when people talk motivation. This guy was fighting at his hometown as the champion, and for him to be saying motivation, now he feels way more motivated, fighting for your country and fighting in front of your people, for your belt, is not enough motivation? What’s going on?”

“I’m motivated. The belt is great. You know what comes with the belt? Bigger paydays, pay-per-views, and a lot of stuff,” Holloway added. “But a belt is a belt and a fight is a fight. I don’t want to go out and get my butt whooped, my ass whooped in front of millions of people watching at home.”

It’s certainly an interesting take here from Holloway. On one hand, how could Aldo not have been completely motivated at UFC 212? After all, he was fighting in his home city, against one of the promotion’s fastest rising stars, in a title fight no less?

But, if you’ve followed Aldo over the years, then you know he’s talked about moving on from fighting in the past. More recently, it was reported he wants to finish out his UFC deal and move into pro-boxing. Could the loss to Holloway have sparked his fire to establish himself as one of the best in the game again? Guess we’ll see soon enough.

UFC 218 will take place in Detroit, Michigan.
