Francis Ngannou left no doubt that he’s next in line for a title shot, after bombing out Alistair Overeem at UFC 218, and now the feared heavyweight has sent a warning shot to the champ.
Leading up to UFC 218, the consensus was that the winner of Overeem – Ngannou would very likely move on to a bout with the champ, Stipe Miocic. But, since Ngannou is still relatively new to the UFC, and MMA period, people understood an emphatic victory might be necessary, to lock up a title shot.
Well, Mr. Ngannou did just that by taking out Overeem with a ridiculous uppercut in the opening round. Then, after the bout, while speaking to the UFC’s Megan Olivi, Ngannou had this message for Miocic (quotes via MMA Mania):
“I just want to tell Stipe I am coming, I am on my way to take my belt,” said Ngannou. “I really thank him for keeping that belt for me but he’s going to give it back. He was just the interim champion, but the real champion is here, the real champ is coming.”
“The match against Stipe, the same way, knockout. There are no other possible for me but a knockout. I just go get myself ready for easy fight and go bacl home. I am not for three or four round right, just a quick knockout and I go back home.”
Those are some bold statements, considering what Miocic has done in his UFC run, and the abilities he’s showcased. But, since no man in Ngannou’s last four fights have made it out of the opening round, it’s not surprising to hear this type of rhetoric right?
Hopefully the UFC can come to terms with Miocic on a new deal, and this fight gets signed for sooner than later. It’s a fight that’s a win-win for the UFC really. If Ngannou wins, then he’ll establish himself as one of the most top commodities in the game. If Miocic wins, however, then we won’t be far out from using terms like “Miocic Era”.
After all, the only other name people talk about, in terms of viable contenders these days for Miocic, is Cain Velasquez, who continues to be sidelined with injuries.
