Kamaru Usman Claims Colby Covington is Ducking Him

Now that a scheduled bout with Emil Meek has fallen through, Kamaru Usman is claiming that Colby Covington’s repeatedly turned down the opportunity to fight him.

Usman was booked to fight Meek at UFC 219, December 30th, but due to visa issues the latter incurred, the fight is apparently off (Meek finally received his visa, but according to Usman and his manager, they had already moved on).

The rising welterweight was on hand this past weekend at UFC 218, and while speaking to media, Usman said this about Covington (quote via MMA Junkie):

“It’s rough because he’s one of those guys who’s specifically been saying I’ve been ducking him, when that fight was never offered,” Usman said. “Now that the fight is being offered and he’s saying, ‘oh, no.’ Blatantly, three different occasions, he said ‘No, no, no.’

“I can’t understand why he wouldn’t take the fight. Well, in a sense I can – he thinks he’s next in line for a title shot. Which, it’s clear they’re not giving you a title shot. So hey, take the fight, at least prove to the people you’re the best, (and) you are next in line for a title shot.”

Considering Covington is ranked #3 in the UFC’s welterweight division, and Usman is #12, one could certainly make the argument “Chaos” has much more to lose.

Usman has gone 6-0 to date in the Octagon.
