Despite losing to rising prospect John Hathaway in his return to welterweight, Diego Sanchez will remain at 170-pounds as he’s set to meet Paulo Thiago at “UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez” on October 23 in Anaheim, California, Sanchez recently confirmed to PennyJoMMA.
Sanchez (21-4) won four-straight over the likes of Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida to earn a shot at lightweight title, but suffered a fifth-round TKO to champ BJ Penn in December. Following the loss, The Ultimate Fighter winner decided to return to welterweight, where he went 7-2 between 2005 and 2008, but dropped a dominant unanimous decision to Hathaway at UFC 114 in May.
Thiago (13-2) rebounded from his first UFC loss to Jon Fitch last July with back-to-back wins over Jacob Volkmann and Mike SwicK, but suffered a unanimous decision loss to Martin Kampmann at June’s UFC 115.
The UFC 121 fight card is headlined by heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez and also features Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampmann, while Patrick Cote expects to return at the pay-per-view event.
