In a highly anticipated match up, Bellator season one tournament winner and current featherweight champion Joe Soto is scheduled to make his first title defense against season two tournament winner Joe Warren at Bellator 27 on September 2 at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, according to a report from MMAJunkie.
Soto (9-0) was crowned the Bellator champion when he defeated Yahir Reyes at Bellator 10 in June of 2009, becoming the season one tournament winner. Since that time he has remained undefeated, submitting Mike Christensen at a Tachi Palace Fights event in October, and earning a TKO victory over Diego Saraiva in a non-title bout at Bellator 19 this past May
Warren (5-1) earned his shot at Soto with a June victory over Patricio Freire at Bellator 23, making him the season two tournament winner. Warren also defeated Georgi Karakhanyan and Eric Marriott on his way to tournament victory. His lone career loss came in the semi-finals of the Dream featherweight grand prix to eventual grand prix winner Bibiano Fernandes at Dream 11.
In other Bellator news, one time UFC competitors Eddie Sanchez and Neil Grove will face off at Bellator 24 on August 1 in Hollywood, Florida. The fight will be a part of the opening round of the promotion’s heavyweight tournament, for which Brock Lesnar training partner Cole Konrad has been confirmed as the seventh participant.
