UFC 117: Thiago Alves Says Weight Cut on Target for Jon Fitch Rematch

Thiago AlvesWhen Thiago Alves failed to show up for Wednesday’s UFC 117 open workouts, rumors began that the welterweight contender, who sheds more than 30 pounds to reach the 170-pound limit, was having trouble making weight for his UFC 117 rematch with Jon Fitch.

Alves said during today’s UFC 117 pre-fight press conference that he had the UFC’s permission to skip the session in favor of a real workout and that his weight cut is going fine (he’s currently just 7 pounds over).

Despite weighing in at 170-pounds for his most-recent fight against Georges St-Pierre last July and only needing to hit 171, Alves said his weight will always be questioned for his past issues, including failing to make weight for the UFC 85 main event against Matt Hughes in 2008.

UFC President Dana White announced Thursday that a welterweight title shot will be on the line when Alves and Fitch meet in the co-main event of UFC 117, which is headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen.
