Pennsylvania was one of the biggest draw states that had yet to lift the ban on MMA events. Well the wait is over. MMA Weekly is reporting that Pennsylvania has voted to lift the ban on MMA events and will begin to write regulations meaning MMA events in the state are on the horizon.
The oddest part of the story is that a 950 person signed electronic petition was one of the major swaying factors. For those unfamiliar with the states recent regulation changes, casinos were opened for the first time in 2006 and more are opening around the state. This decision may convince some of the betting venues to add arenas for boxing and MMA events to accompany them.
The two target markets in Pennsylvania include Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The Philadelphia venue would likely be the Wachovia center that holds nearly 22,000 people. Pittsburgh’s indoor venue would either be the Petersen Events Center or the Mellon Arena. A new arena is being planned for the city which could be a potential venue several years down the road.
