Gabe Ruediger Out of UFC 123 Fight Against Paul Kelly

A groin injury has forced Gabe Ruediger out of his matchup with fellow lightweight Paul Kelly on the preliminary card of UFC 123 on Nov. 20 in Detroit.

“I’ve been training with injuries for this whole camp and I’ve been trying to just work around them,” Ruediger wrote on his website. “One injury that has been giving me daily issues was a groin strain. I was wrapping it and just enduring the pain, but Wednesday, I was back to wrestling and my groin tore all the way through. As I laid on the mat I knew it was bad, but it wasn’t until Friday that I realized that it would be impossible to be ready for my upcoming bout.

“Leading up to this injury, I was training very hard and felt very confident that I would be well prepared for my bout against a tough Paul Kelly. The fact that the UFC gave me another chance was appreciated and I wanted to make the most of it. I’m hoping with proper rehab to be back as soon as possible.”

Ruediger (17-6), a castmember on The Ultimate Fighter 5, had his six-fight win streak snapped in his UFC return against Joe Lauzon in August, but was still given another shot inside the Octagon.

Kelly (10-3), who now awaits a new opponent for UFC 123, is looking to bounce back from an August loss to Jacob Volkmann, which dropped him to 1-2 in his last three fights.

The UFC 123 fight card is headlined by former champs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida and BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes.
