Quick Hits: Chael Sonnen Update, Anderson Silva Resumes Training, UFC Goes After Google, and More

  • Chael SonnenWith the Dec. 2 appeal of Chael Sonnen’s failed UFC 117 drug test fast approaching, it appears likely that the middleweight contender will argue that supposedly previously-approved hormone replacement therapy for low testosterone caused the positive test.
  • Ed Soares tells MMAFighting that UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva has resumed training after taking time off for a lingering rib injury and said Silva is “very focused and looking forward to defending the title” against Vitor Belfort at February’s UFC 126.
  • The UFC’s parent company, Zuffa LLC., recently issued a cease and desist letter to Google, the latest in the ongoing battle against the unauthorized viewing of UFC pay-per-views. The cease and desist letter pertains to the results of Google web searches leading searchers to piracy sites.
  • Dana White expects the UFC’s popular “UFC Prelims” series on Spike TV to return in 2011, but a deal has not yet been finalized.
  • After Saturday’s UFC 122, Dana White said he likes Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, but that he’s in no hurry to bring him to the UFC and questions his ranking as a top ten heavyweight.
  • Duane “Bang” Ludwig will undergo surgery for a broken hand suffered in his successful return to welterweight against Nick Osipczak at UFC 122.
  • Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently said he expects women’s star Gina Carano to return next year, that a rematch between lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez and Shinya Aoki is in the works but not set for DREAM’s year-end “Dynamite” event, and that Nick Diaz vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller is possible for 2011.
  • After suffering his third-straight loss at the hands of Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 122, Goran Reljic has been released by the UFC.
  • Gegard Mousasi recently informed MMAJunkie that he expects to face famed kickboxer Jerome LeBanner at DREAM’s “Dynamite” event on New Year’s Eve in Japan before planning to make a February return to Strikeforce to fight light heavyweight contender Mike Kyle.
  • Grappling ace Rolles Gracie has signed with Shine Fights after a disappointing UFC debut back in February and will face Mike Ciesnolevicz at the promotion’s January 8 return, which will also feature the debut of TUF 8 winner Efrain Escudero.
  • Veteran Japanese official Samio Kimura was assaulted at Grachan 5 trying to stop Takeo Shiina after Shiina knocked out his opponent, Jung Hyun Lee. Shiina was disqualified and at the time of this post has not been punished further.
  • UFC veteran Jonathan Goulet has announced his retirement after suffering a second-round knockout to fellow Canadian Chris Clements over the weekend in Montreal.
