DREAM has announced the addition of a featherweight title bout to their annual New Year’s Eve Dynamite!! event, as Bibiano Fernandes will defend his belt against Japanese knockout artist Hiroyuki Takaya in a rematch of their September 2009 matchup that led to a split decision victory for the Brazilian.
Due to pay disputes with DREAM, this will be Fernandes first bout since his March victory over Joachim Hansen. Takaya has put together a 2-1 record since their 2009 fight including a knockout of former WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe in his last fight.
This news could have UFC implications as MMAFighting reports Japanese fighter Michihiro Omigama will reportedly look stateside for fights as the fighter feels he is being passed over for an opportunity at the DREAM featherweight belt.
The night before the New Year’s Eve card, World Victory Road will host its “Soul of Fight” even, where Dave Herman and Yoshihiro Nakao will square off in a heavyweight battle. Herman has garnered a reputation as a finisher having never been to decision in his 21 career fights, while Nakao is probably best known for his role in “The Kiss” incident, where he kissed Heath Herring in their pre-fight staredown in their 2005 Dynamite!! bout.
