UFC 124 Predictions for ‘St-Pierre vs. Koscheck 2’

Georges St-PierreWith UFC 124 and its headlining rematch between welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck less than 24-hours away, it’s time for MMAFrenzy.com’s writers and staff to weigh in with their predictions on Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Montreal.

Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck
UFC Welterweight Championship

Kris Karkoski: Like their first meeting, I expect another close fight that goes the distance and give the edge to Georges St-Pierre retaining his title by holding his own with Koscheck on the ground and outpointing him slightly on the feet.

Chris L.: I think St-Pierre should win it, but my instincts are saying Koscheck for some reason.

FR702: Even though I also have never seen Koscheck this ‘focused’ on one objective and can see him getting the upset via this-round TKO, I’m going with St-Pierre by Kimura. If you don’t like takedown’s and ground fighting DO NOT watch this fight, but I will be tuning in.

BSBiz: The winner of this fight will be the one who controls the ground. Whether that’s one of the fighters stuffing take downs or getting take downs doesn’t matter, watch for this to determine the winner. Despite their proclamations and guarantees, don’t expect to see a glorious, definitive finish, but rather an exciting, grinding decision. Hopefully the judges have their glasses on. I predict Leonard Garcia will win.

Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle

Kris Karkoski: Both guys can finish fights, but Struve has significantly more notable experience and I give him the edge.

Chris L.: Stefan Struve

FR702: Though I’m pulling for Struve, I think McCorkle takes a unanimous decision.

BSBiz: If Struve is allowed to turn this fight into a kickboxing match, he will likely win. He has solid technical striking and being easily five or six inches taller than McCorkle plays into his strengths. McCorkle should turn this into a barroom brawl, including getting into Struve’s legs and not letting go.

Joe Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig

Kris Karkoski: With their UFC futures likely on the line we could see some fireworks, but I expect Stevenson to control Danzig and claim a decision to stay alive.

Chris L.: Joe Stevenson

FR702: Mac Danzig by split decision

BSBiz: Oh, how the famous have fallen. This is a fight for their UFC careers. Who would have thought after some of Stevenson’s famous fights? And Mac Danzig? The only thing saving you from being labeled Worst TUF Winner Ever is Efrain Escudero (and his bad haircut). Could be exciting, but don’t bet any money on that.

Thiago Alves vs. John Howard

Kris Karkoski: Alves was rumored to have an easier cut to 170-pounds this time around and I expect his new diet to show in this fight, leading to a dominant stoppage of Howard in the second.

Chris L.: Thiago Alves

FR702: John Howard

BSBiz: Alves kept his welterweight career alive by making weight and will have to deal with Howard’s technical striking and takedowns when he gets in the cage, but Howard has to survive on his feet. Good luck with that.

Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira

Kris Karkoski: This is another fight where I think Octagon experience is the difference and lets Miller edge the up-and-comer Oliveira to move closer to a title shot.

Chris L.: Jim Miller

FR702: Oliveira by submission in the second, or else Miller will earn a decision, but this one could go either way.

BSBiz: I would never bet against a Miller on the main card, and it’s a huge step up for Oliveira in just his third UFC fight. Miller is so well rounded he will be difficult to defeat. However, Oliveira has the talent, he just needs to apply it. Good luck, buddy.
