The semifinals for Strikeforce’s upcoming heavyweight tournament will likely take place around July while the finals are “targeted for October” according to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter. It hasn’t been determined yet whether or not these events will air on Showtime or PPV, however.
The tourney quarterfinals begin on February 12th in East Rutherford, New Jersey with Fedor Emelianenko vs Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Andrei Arlovski vs Sergei Kharitonov. A reserve bout pitting Lavar Johnson vs Shane Del Rosario and another between Ray Sefo and Valentijn Overeem are also in the works for that event. If any injuries occur during the tournament, the winners of those reserve bouts could serve as alternates.
Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers are scheduled to complete the quarterfinals at an unannounced April event, skipping March’s “Strikeforce: Columbus”.
Meltzer also reports that undefeated prospect Daniel Cormier is slated to become the number two alternate behind the Del Rosario/Johnson winner provided that he wins his upcoming bout this Friday against Devin Cole at Strikeforce Challengers 13 and was considered for the tournament itself at one point.
