Undefeated UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is set to undergo surgery today in Las Vegas to repair his torn rotator cuff.
Velasquez’s trainer and head of American Kickboxing Academy, Javier Mendez, tells Ariel Helwani via Versus.com that the doctors have stated that Velasquez’s “left rotator cuff was 90% torn.”
Mendez also states that if everything goes smooth with the surgery, “Velasquez will be able to resume training in three months.” He states that in “a perfect world, Velasquez (would) defend his heavyweight title in August.”
It’s expected that Velasquez will defend his title against the winner of the upcoming Brock Lesnar/Junior dos Santos fight sometime in the fall. That number one contenders bout is expected at UFC 131 on June 11 in Vancouver.
Velasquez suffered the injury during his title winning bout against the former champion Lesnar.
