After ending a two-year layoff with a 3-1 mark in 2010 that included a pair of first-round wins just four days apart in December, Cristiano Marcello meets Oriol Gasset on Saturday in his native Brazil with hopes of earning a trip to Strikeforce and matchup with Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, who he famously choked out during a backstage brawl in PRIDE in 2005.
“[Gaset’s] a little bit good in ground and stand up. He’s a big name in Europe. He’s good at every situation. It’s gonna be good for the show and for the fans,” Marcello recently told MMAFrenzy.com.
Though he’s focused on his impending bout with Gaset for Nitrix’s 155-pound title, Marcello says a fight with Krazy Horse is what fans want to see and offers him another chance at revenge, even if other matchups would be better for his career.
“It’s not that I want this fight [with Krazy Horse], but the people keep asking me for it, so I say I am ready if someone makes it happen,” Marcello said. “He has disrespected my friends by saying too much trash, so if someone makes this happen, I will fight him. I have a lot of guys I want to fight before him. So many guys are better for my career, you know, but if people want to see it, then bring him on.”
Despite leaving Chute Boxe in 2007 to start his own CM System, Marcello said his departure from one of Brazil’s top camps has given him with more time to take his own career to the next level.
“In Chute Boxe, I didn’t have a lot of time for myself,” Marcello said. “There are so many stars in the academy and I had to take care of the guys because that was my duty. I didn’t have a lot of time to fight myself and take care of my career. Now I can do that because I fightfor myself and my academy. I train the same way for all fights. I have to be prepared at all times. Any time someone can call up and offer a fight so I have to stay ready. Thanks to Alchemist, my friends Andrew and Nima, and all my guys at my academy for supporting me.”
