Strikeforce Confirms April 9 Event with Two Title Bouts, No Heavyweight Grand Prix

Nick DiazStrikeforce’s April 9 event is expected to take place in San Diego and will feature a pair of title bouts, as welterweight champ Nick Diaz takes on Paul Daley and lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez battles Tatsuya Kawajiri, the promotion confirmed on Tuesday.

However, the Showtime-televised event won’t include the remaining opening round bouts from Strikeforce’s heavyweight grand prix, which will instead headline a June 18 event in Dallas.

Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers will top the card, which also includes former light heavyweight champ Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and could feature the return of Gina Carano, ESPN’s Josh Gross reports.

The April 9 event is also reportedly set to include former light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle, along with lightweight grappling ace Shinya Aoki. K.J. Noons also recently announced plans to return to lightweight at the April 9 event, but is not expected to face Aoki.
