The Bellator Season 4 lightweight tournament kicked off from Shreveport, Louisiana tonight. The lightweights put on an exciting array of fights tonight with all fights finishing within the distance. The fights aired live on MTV2.
“Razor” Rob MacCullough vs. Patricky Freire
Brazilian prospect Patricky Freire put on an impressive performance tonight against longtime veteran “Razor” Rob MacCullough tonight at Bellator 36.
Freire came out strong in the first dropping MacCullough and nearly finishing MacCullough with a rear naked choke. The veteran MacCullough rallied in the second though and finished the second raining strikes down to end the second. In the third, MacCullough fired a hard inside leg kick to Freire, but Freire stayed in the pocket and countered with hard overhand right to drop “Razor” Rob.
Lloyd Woodard vs. Casey Vanier
Lloyd Woodard secured his advancement in the Season 4 Bellator Tournament after catching Casey Vanier advancing with a counter hook. Vanier showed strong wrestling early in the fight but exposed himself to strikes on the way in. That flaw ended up being his downfall as Woodard came out firing in the second and caught the Greg Jackson fighter.
Josh Shockley vs. Toby Imada
In other action, late replacement Josh Shockley put on a strong showing against Bellator mainstay Toby Imada but it wasn’t enough to advance. Imada secured an armbar in the first which Shockley tried to counter by slamming his way out of. Unfortunately, Shockley landed awkwardly on the slam causing him to yell in pain. The referee took this as a verbal submission and Imada was declared the winner. It was unclear if Shockley could have continued.
Michael Chandler vs. Marcin Held
Finally, lightweights Michael Chandler and Marcin Held met on the card’s opening fight. The Polish prospect Held secured a nasty kneebar and appeared to be close to winning the fight before Chandler somehow fought out of the kneebar. Chandler then rained down strikes before securing an arm-triangle to finish Held in the first round.
