Former WEC lightweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner Mac Danzig will square off at “UFC 131: Lesnar vs. dos Santos” on June 11 in Vancouver, the UFC announced Monday.
Cerrone (14-3) made his UFC debut at UFC 126 with a second-round submission over Paul Kelly and has won three-straight with WEC wins over Jamie Varner and Chris Horodecki before the promotion was merged with the UFC.
Danzig (20-8-1) is coming off a knockout win over Joe Stevenson at December’s UFC 124, but has struggled since winning TUF 6 with a 4-4 record inside the Octagon.
The two fighters have engaged in a modest war of words recently. After Cerrone made several comments about wanting to face UFC lightweight Cole Miller upon entering the UFC, Danzig posted a comment about “Cowboy” on his Twitter.
“So all you have to do to secure a fight you haven’t earned is wear a silly hat, call yourself ‘Cowboy’ and talk trash? Seems strange,” Danzig tweeted.
Cerrone rebuttled via MMAWeekly Radio before UFC 126.
“First of all, Danzig, you were on the chopping block and then you accidentally knocked out my teammate, Joe Stevenson. Now you want to do exactly what I did by calling Cole Miller out and you want to be a hypocrite. Come on, bro!”
UFC 131 features a heavyweight battle between The Ultimate Fighter 13 coaches and heavyweight contenders Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos. Fights also signed include Mark Munoz vs. Demian Maia, Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Anthony Perosh, Darren Elkins vs. Michihiro Omigawa, and Court McGee vs. Jesse Bongfeldt.
