UFC 129 headliners Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields will be featured in the newest installment of the UFC Primetime series on Spike TV, UFC President Dana White confirmed with MMAWeekly.com
UFC welterweight champion St. Pierre (21-2 MMA, 15-2 UFC) will look to defend his belt for the sixth-consecutive time against a very formidable opponent in Shields (26-4-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC 129.
As with the past Primetime series shows, both fighters and their histories will be showcased leading up to their title fight. This will give great exposure for Shields, who is one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, yet hardly gets exposure within the casual MMA market:
“Yeah we’re going to do a Primetime on those two,” White said. “So everything you didn’t know about Georges St-Pierre from the other 7 Primetimes, you’ll learn in this one.”
Unlike Shields, St. Pierre has been featured in the Primetime series multiple times throughout his UFC tenure. As MMAWeekly’s Damon Martin points out, this could be the perfect opportunity for the casual fans to get an idea of who Shields is and what he can bring to the table:
The other possibility that may happen during the Primetime series are Shields past fights from organizations like Elite XC and Strikeforce. See with the recent purchase of the San Jose based promotion, the UFC now retains their entire catalog of videos as well, which includes some of Shields biggest wins including victories over Dan Henderson, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and Paul Daley.
UFC 129 is set to take place on April 30th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Rogers Centre. There is no official confirmed date for when the series is set to air, but will more than likely begin at some point in mid-April.
