A rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champions Forrest Griffin and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will be featured on the “UFC: Rio” fight card for the UFC’s return to Brazil on Aug. 27, UFC President Dana White confirmed to MMAFighting on Friday.
Griffin spoiled Rua’s UFC debut in 2007 with a surprising third-round submission of the PRIDE veteran that earned The Ultimate Fighter winner a title shot that he went on to win over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
After rebounding from back-to-back losses with a November 2009 win over Tito Ortiz, Griffin (18-6) returned to the Octagon in February with a unanimous decision over Rich Franklin.
Meanwhile, Rua (19-5) would recover and go on to win the 205-pound belt from Lyoto Machida last May , but dropped the title with a third-round TKO to Jon Jones last month.
UFC: Rio is expected to be headlined by a rematch between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.
