New York Unlikely to Sanction MMA in 2011

As expected, New York is unlikely to legalize mixed martial arts this year, after opposition from the Speaker of the state Assembly put a likely halt on legislation to sanction the sport despite overwhelmingly passing in the Senate and a key committee.

“There does not appear to be widespread support in the Assembly for this legislation,” Speaker Sheldon Silver told the NY Daily News ahead of the June 20 end of the legislative session.

Silver faces opposition from fellow Democrats, one of whom reportedly called his position “illogical and irrational,” particularly because of the potential revenue MMA could bring during their fiscal crisis.
