Strikeforce to Use Sudden Death Round for Heavyweight Grand Prix Draws

Fabricio WerdumA fourth, sudden death round will be used to settle draws in Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix when the tournament resumes at Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum” event in Dallas.

The tourney previously used a fourth judge to settle potential draws, but will now use an extra round instead now that it’s owned by the UFC, MMAFighting reports.

The tiebreaker wasn’t needed when the grand prix began in April, as Antonio Silva stopped Fedor Emelianenko and Sergei Kharitonov knocked out Andrei Arlovski.

The tournament continues when heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem faces Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett takes on Brett Rogers on Saturday’s Showtime-televised main card.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are three-round, non-title bouts, while the final, slated for early next year, will be five rounds.
