Raphael Assunção (14-4) will make his bantamweight debut against UFC newcomer and former world grappling champion Darren “BC” Uyenoyama (6-3) on the UFC 134 preliminary card.
Assunção will hope the drop to 135-pounds leads to a reversal of fortunes as the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt has won just one of his last four. All three of the former top featherweight’s recent losses have come to top ten talent, and Assunção will look to regain the form that he had in wins over UFC lightweight contender Joe Lauzon and Strikeforce’s presumed number one lightweight contender Jorge Masividal.
Uyenoyama is just 2-2 in his last four while fighting for Strikeforce as well as Dream, Deep, and Shooto in Japan.
UFC 134 takes place on August 27 in Rio de Janerio, Brazil and is headlined by a rematch between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.
The card marks the UFC’s first trip to the city since UFC 17.5 (Ultimate Brazil) and will also feature a rematch between Forrest Griffin and Marucio Rua along with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Shaub.
