Big John McCarthy Joins Affliction Banned as Color Announcer

By: | Jul 4,2008

Affliction: BannedFormer MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy may have retired from working in the UFC Octagon but he will be a color commentator for the July 19th “Affliction Banned” pay-per-view event, featuring the WAMMA heavyweight championship fight between the most lethal MMA heavyweight of all-time, Russian M1 superstar legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (27-1), and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (24-4), live from Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

A black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, McCarthy refereed 535 fights during his 14 years as an MMA referee, and he operates an MMA school in Valencia, California. He started refereeing in the UFC’s second show in 1994 and retired this past December. An MMA ambassador all over the world, “Big” John developed into being as much a part of the UFC as the fighters that entered the Octagon. Now, though, he is a member of Team Affliction.

“Affliction Banned,” presented by Affliction Entertainment, is so stacked with talent that it had to be separated into two live shows produced for broadcast. The night’s activities will kick off with a one-hour, free live telecast on FSN (Fox Sports Net) in the United States and on The Fight Network in Canada starting at 5 PM Pacific (8 PM/ET), dubbed “Affliction Live.” Following that is “Affliction Banned” — five incredible fights on pay-per-view starting at 6 PM/PT (9 PM/ET) via iN DEMAND, TVN, Shaw Communications, Viewers Choice Canada, DirecTV, DISH Network, Bell ExpressVue and Star Choice in the United States and Canada for a suggested retail price of $39.95.

Tickets for “Affliction Banned” range between $50.00 and $1,000.00, and are on sale at Honda Center’s Box Office and also online at Ticketmaster.com.

No great surprise here, Big John has been so biased with his comments in favour of Afflication lately that you had to think he was on there payroll anyway.

    I agree with you jpm

He has been so biased with his comments , so it make me think as well he was on Afflcation’s payroll

Where have you two been? He’s been saying for months that he’s working for Affliction! He works with their clothing line and for the fight network, which will be broadcasting affliction in Canada.
saying he’s “biased” makes it sound like he was making some ethical error. he hid nothing that he was going to work for affliction.
nonetheless, he’s right! this is going to be one of the best fight cards in mma history.
    so your comments are ridiculous.

i agree, now he’s left the ufc all he does is citicise them

  • SiMonsterD said:

    I agree with you both

His comments have been biased, it was clear he was on Afflcation’s payroll.

    (Echo, echo echo…)

big john is a big moron…

  • Smitty said:

Dana is being a moron, though. I dont understand why he is so quick to fire fighters and even quickier to shut down other organizations. Where are the other fighters to go after they are cut from ufc payroll. John is right, I am going to buy “banned” & tivo UFC

  • Smitty said:

also you all that are against Big John, get of his BIG JOHN!!!

    FAGS!!!

  • Pete90 said:

we’re not against him he’s just being biased! There are so many organisaions out there, there will always be somewhere to fight! chill out Smitty

  • joel b said:

he is not being biased he said he will tivo the ufc…….cause he is working the other show thats all. also everyone knows that dana wants to maintain his monoply.

also dana is about exciting fights thats what sells. so he lets the lack luster fighters go adn brings in the tim boetch and houston alexanders of the fight world

alot of the high profile fighters that are getting out are really being a group of cry babies they want this they want that. oh they disrespect fighters. i would like to know WHAT DOESNT DISRESPECT A FIGHTER!!!!. they are edgy people as it is. they show they get paid i just dont see where the disrepect comes from i would love to see a fighter actually sight and example

  • Pete90 said:

    i agree joel b

at the end of the day the UFC is a business and all the fertittas and dana want to do is make money if fighters arnt exciting then they arnt making them money so whats the point of keeping them on the pay roll??

  • Dietrich said:

I wish he could have made the transition in the UFC.Its kind of sad…

  • Jonathan said:

If you were being paid a ton of money you would be biased too. Don’t forget that Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogen is also bias and don’t even talk about things like “The Randy Coutour Situation”. They constantly refer to events as “This is what the UFC is all about”. Everyone wants to sell their own company. Its just business. . . but it makes me upset as a fan.

  • steve mitchell said:

I’ve loved the UFC but i feel it could be going same way as WWE etc where $$$$ talks and things aint what they should be ie Rampage loosing, Silva to Couture etc etc etc these guys are not happy that’s obvious talking as a ex pro in UK what the promoters says goes cause they pay the salaries!!! if you get my drift???
    Respect all!!
