Quote of the Day: Anderson Silva’s Manager Says GSP Doesn’t Deserve Fight With Silva
- By: Kris Karkoski | Jul 23, 2008
“That’s sound great, I think GSP is an incredible fighter. But I think GSP needs to prove himself. He still hasn’t had a successful title defense (at 170 lbs.). I don’t really feel that he deserves (a Silva fight) yet. Go defend your title a few times and then we’ll talk.”
Anderson Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, tells ProMMARadio (via Yahoo! Sports) that he doesn’t feel UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre is deserving of a fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Soares also discussed a rumored fall title bout with middleweight contender Patrick Cote:
“It’s going to be an exciting fight. You know Cote isn’t going to go to the ground. You know Cote’s going to want to stand up and bang. I don’t really recall him ever being knocked out. People like to watch people stand-up and go at it. That’s what you’ll get with putting those guys in the Octagon.”

I agree! Lets GSP defend his title a couple times then we’ll take about this

*talk
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
i could see his point, but at the same time if gsp doesn’t deserve a shot, who does? all the 185’s that deserve a shot have pretty much already had it. and gsp may not have defended the title yet, but he’s beaten hughes twice as well as kos as well as reclaimed the title. i’d say he’s as good a candidate as anyone else and what’s also important to consider is the drawing power that fight will have.
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:43 pm
i agree gsp needs to defend his title a few times to prove he is a real champion that can just chose to fight who he wants, and same with bj penn wanting to fight gsp now, bj is amazing and thats all he talks about how hes an incredible champion in two weight classes but get a few defences before talking about moving around classes for superfights. it sucks to see a champion move weight class, lose, then just go back and settle with the belt he already has
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Usually, when you hear a statement like that it is a diversionary tactic and could very well indicate that Silva’s camp considers GSP a very real threat.
My thoughts on what makes puts Silva on another plane, besides his obvious well rounded MMA skills, are his deceiving quickness, accuracy and superior athleticism. Most MMA fighters are not pure athletes. However, IMO, Silva is and guess what? So is GSP and he can match him in those three areas and may actually be a little faster/nimble. It could prove to be a very interesting matchup. GSP could very well avoid Silva’s clinch and he is hard as hell to take down, ask Huges about that. I think GSP gets beat when he beats himself and is not mentally ready for a fight and it looks like he has shored up the emotional side of things. Personally, I think they know GSP potentially could ruin Silva’s run and they don’t want that fight.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:06 pm
GSP needs to beat Fitch, Alves and Penn.
Then he can move up to 185 and get destroyed by the Spider.
Anderson is simply too big for St-Pierre.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Tspence i agree, especially penn. If he really wants to be a legend he needs to clean out his weight class first before moving up a division. IMO.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:34 pm
I see Silva annihilating Cote at UFC 88, then jumping back up to 205 to successfully take on a top light-heavy.
Then he will probably fight Okami and Bisping at 185 before possibly fighting for the 205 lb. strap.
I also think Dana White is trying to put Henderson in line for another crack at Anderson’s 185 lb. title.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:39 pm
give it 18 mounths gsp will defend against fitch alvez, koschek, and sanchez. Silva will defend against cote, bisping, and any other rising 185er. Gsp vs silva dec 2009 biggest fight ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
GSP vs. Silva who cares… Spider vs. Iceman, before it’s to late to matter. Spider will destroy anyone probably Chuck to, but at very least everyone would love to see that fight.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 pm
thats one of the best super fights anyone can think of. chucks power in his striking vs spiders precision vs both there ability to get hurt and still pull out the W
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:04 pm
i think chuck would knockout anderson.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Yeah, it’s like who cares: GSP will get destroyed by anderson silva (I’m Canadian). Silva at 205 is much more interesting (he will absolutely destroy most of that division as well.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
yeah im canadian too i love gsp hes incredible but after the loss to serra he really needs to do alot to live up to this hype hes got going now, and i defenitely believe anderson would have one incredible first round knockout..
does gsp have to be so good so he doesnt get hit???…
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:54 pm
i dont believe that gsp even wants to fight silva he has trouble with some of his 170 guys he would be dwarfed come fight day. also i believe cote will get knocked out something fierce I mean look irvin was a KO artist right ??? what makes cote any different.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
And the Tango begins…
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
i agree cote cant compete with silva, he was an excellent fighter in tko but he got outclassed at first in the ufc and seems that hes shown his power with the lucky punch, and hes shown he can punch out a decision against a couple smaller guys who else couldnt compete with silva
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
I would like to hear some opinions on a good opponent for the Spider. I really think Chuck could match up. Anyone else have an opinion.
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:30 pm
chuck will ko silva…silva has not been hit by someone with the power of chuck plus is a big 205…chuck by knock out and it wont be a suprise.
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
honestly i dunno how much smaller gsp is than silva. i was surprised silva weighed in at 206 cuz he looks like he doesn’t need to cut to make 185. conversely, gsp looks huge at 170 and they’re only about an inch apart in height so i think their actual weight is a lot closer than what we might think. still, i agree, as good as gsp is, i don’t see him beating silva, not yet anyways. but it would be fun to see. as for chuck, i think silva’s alot smarter striker than most of his past opponents so i don’t really see him walkin into that many shots. honestly i think i’d rather see silva vs silva at 205.
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I cannot think of anyone to match up with Silva. I would love to see him kick the **** out of plenty of guys but none match up with him or stand a chance. The man is a machine.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
im really am not interested in seeing this fight..but i think gsp could possibly beat anderson..i mean if gsp used dan hendersons game plan but instead of not using it in the second like dan use it the whole fight and win!
I mean remember dan henderson did beat anderson in rnd 1 and i think given a second chance henderson will destroy him!
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Pff if the ufc want to make this guy the best p4p guy he should start making up for his losses yes he is really good at destroying usa fighters but its time for the ufc to bring in those how have beaten him aka. Daiju Takase or Ryo Chonan both these men have got wins over silva with submission vics, or Luiz Azeredo now that was a close fight but ufc need to bring these guys in right they did it for chuck he ended up lossing again but it shows if you have what it takes!
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:39 pm
henderson is the best next middleweight challenger for him. who else at 185 can compete with the spider like hendo, i recommend usiing wikipedia to look at peoples records. henderson will fight him again and i believe can beat him.
bj has always talked about moving around weight classes and has fought at alot. maybe he should go up to 185 and fight anderson if he thinks he can dominate any weight class.
i want gsp to stick to 170 and take out the division, hes been number 1 contender for along time and hes finally past matt hughs and serra for now and i he can defenitely take out koscheck sanchez alves fitch easily. go canada!
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Now that i read that i remeber seeing Daiju Takase fight . this guy beat silva in pride 26 in a very impressive victory like he was right to the point probably the only fight silva really lost completely hands down was out classed by his ground game took him like 8 something min to do it but silva was on his back the whole thing. That would be a good rematch
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
If GSP beats Fitch, I see him destroying his next few opponents as well. I will be convinced his loss to Serra was just a fluke. I do not feel Serra deserves a rematch but if he gets one it had better be on spike for free. Any word on Serra?
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Just a thought
Does Bisping even stand a chance Vs. Silva, he seems to hit harder at 185, HE rocked DAY, and McCarthy he has submission skills, not sure about his Sub. DEFENSE, he has the length, Guess we can take alittle from the upcoming Leban fight. Since Silva rocked him. I mean besides Hendo and Okami who else can there be.
Would like to see vera Vs. Silve once Vera figures out the 205 cut so he won’t gas like he did against reese.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
I agree, before we get ahead of ourselves GSP has to defend a few times. He’s my favourite fighter and I think that he can and will do this, but anything can happen in the UFC. Hopefully this fight will come sooner rather than later though. Oh and Silva against a top LHW would be interesting.
July 24th, 2008 at 12:01 am
segablack do your homework, most of those fights were between four to eight years ago. Silva has definently improved a ton. Just thought I would point that out.
July 24th, 2008 at 12:36 am
Does anyone know if a.silva is fighting is ATL sept 6th
July 24th, 2008 at 12:55 am
randall - He may possibly fight at UFC 88 but nothing is official at this point. Other possible events include UFC 89 and UFC 90 in October.
July 24th, 2008 at 1:02 am
I agree with Ed Soares to a certain extent, where i agree with him that GSP needs to defend his title, but if that fight were to happen soon, i wouldn’t argue at all because GSP is my top 5 P4P fighters.
July 24th, 2008 at 1:07 am
That Ryo Chonan submission over anderson was one of the most impressive I have seen. But he was getting his a$$ handed to him before the submission and I don’t see anderson letting chonan pull another magic ninja move again. I want anderson vs. forest I know it isnt going to happen at least not soon but it would be fun. also, fedor vs. randy sooooooo exciting but is randy under contract with ufc? champions collide ufc buys out affliction and we get fedor vs randy and big nog vs arlovski how sweet would it be
July 24th, 2008 at 1:11 am
Facts on GSP and Silva
Silva Never been knocked out/ always on the mark with his striking/ reach , good foot work / good BJJ/ Muay thai.
GSP Decent chin/ Great wrestler/ good BJJ/ good built/ good striking.
For GSP to finish this fight he needs to take it to the ground and submit Silva. or decision.
For Silva to win throw a few bombs at GSP chin. or decision.
Now everyone talks about Liddell Vs. Silva just does Chuck have the foot speed to time Silva with a bomb, I think not, not like Chuck doesn’t have power just does he land it? I think Silva throws a few leg kicks at Liddell. Personally I don’t believe in throwing away money that why you never bet against Silva.
July 24th, 2008 at 1:13 am
The fight i would pay anything to see would be liddell vs. silva. There was talk of it mabye happening if silva defends and liddell takes care of evans, but who knows.
July 24th, 2008 at 1:14 am
Holy crap. Just for the record me and KOuch agree on something. Thats a first…
-K-
Anyone who thinks GSP is weak, or unsable, or mentally not right is a fool. His loss to Hughes was because of his mental game, and he rebounded by destroying hughes. His loss to serra was a complete fluke and look what he did to Serra. You could easily say he is a guy thats never been REALLY beat, because he came back and destroyed the only 2 people to blemish him. If/When he kills Fitch which I really think he will, they will try to have GSP fight Penn again, who I think GSP will also beat up fairly bad (remember their first fight GSP got a finger to the eye midway through the first round and took hell from Penn and stayed standing, he really does have a good chin)
Dana does NOT want GSP fighting Silva right now because there are too many people at 170 to have GSP fight (including a few 155′ers like Sherk 2 and Penn 2) And with A. Silva destroying Overratted-Irvin they’ll give him a few more 205′ers as well as mentioned above Cote, Okami and Bisping.
Now the way I see that GSP fight going down is I think A. Silva has a huge gap in his ground game against top wrestlers. Also every one of his losses have come by way of submission (acept the DQ) I think GSP could take him. I also think Silva could KO GSP. So it’s back and forth but I think if anyone can beat Silva it’s GSP.
July 24th, 2008 at 1:16 am
I kind of agree with Anderson, but using his logic who does deserve a crack at the spider? Cote for beating a bunch of guys that he’s expected to? Bisping for looking good since dropping to MW but beating 2 guys that are far from top contenders? Frankilin for having his ass handed to him twice? I could go on………….. Like I say, I agree with Anderson’s sentiment but surely GSP deserves it as much as the next guy.
July 24th, 2008 at 5:04 am
i want this fight to happen as much as anyone else, but i do agree that he should defend his title a few times 1st. there are at least a few guys he should fight like diego, thiago alves, and probably even koschek again. i’m not saying that any of these guys will beat him, but he shouldn’t leave any doubt in people’s minds that he deserves that fight.
July 24th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Remember though guys, as far as silva vs cote goes. Silva has never really had his chin tested, and we know that Cote can total people with both hands. BUT, that’s the same thing they said about Irvin, so we’ll see. But Cote would destroy Irvin too. Either way, Bisping is a turd and has only ever fought pussies except for Evans (who i love, but who is definitely going to be going to sleep again liddell) and bisping does not deserve a title shot, and if he does happen to get one, silva will tear that douche bag apart.
I’d love for GSPs first fight at middle weight (should he ever choose to move up) to be against michael bisping…. ****in’ eh.
July 24th, 2008 at 8:53 am
I also think that if you give Amir Sadollah two fights, his 3rd fight he’ll destroy Bisping.
Chris
July 24th, 2008 at 8:54 am
The only fighter who has had any success with Silva was Travis Lutter. He mounted Silva on the ground and had the chance to pound him out. I believe anyone who to stands with Silva will be knocked out. I would like to see BJ Penn fight Silva. BJ has good hands and has the talent to make Silva tap but the weight and reach advantage silva has would be to much to over come for BJ. That leaves GSP who has great ground game and could put Silva on his back. GSP has the power to make Silva tap. The problem most have with Silva is if the trade punches with him they wake up in the back room.
July 24th, 2008 at 9:17 am
I agree totally. GSP has to show that he can be dominate at 170 before he fights Silva or Penn. There’s tons of challenges at 170 for him. Of course he has to beat Fitch, then theres Alves, Swick, Sanchez, and a possible rematch with Koscheck.
Silva versus Cote will be a brutal match. Two stand up guys with crazy power and strong chins. It’s going to beat a slugfest until someone falls. I give the advantage to Silva, because I believe he’s more well rounded and has more ways to win in his arsenal. To be honest though, I would have loved to see Silva get the opportunity to revenge his DQ loss to Okami.
July 24th, 2008 at 9:17 am
I think in a rematch with kos…i think kos might upset….josh has been looking really good lately…hes really turned his whole game around…plus to me gsp doesnt seem like the same fighter anymore…which i mean he kinda fights wrestling only anymore that seems to be what he likes to do anymore….He hasnt used his striking standing as much since serra ko’d him!
July 24th, 2008 at 9:29 am
GSP will likely dominate the 170lb division so this could be a matchup in a year or so. I’d love to see it!
July 24th, 2008 at 9:29 am
All this GSP talk makes me want to see him fight today. I’m getting excited for his fight against Fitch. Since Fitch is a local fighter where I live, I’m bias and want him to win. He has his work cut out for him and if he is not 110% against GSP, he is going to get destroyed. On the other hand I hope GSP wins because I want to see another dominant champ in a division other than MW. GSP has the athletic and fighting ability to go down in MMA history as one of the greatest ever. GSP should be a TUF coach in a USA vs Canada season. I’m torn. It sucks someone has to lose. In the long run it will make for better match ups in the future if GSP wins. Then we get to see him take on BJ again and hopefully Silva in the future.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I had a dream a few nights ago that Urijah Faber made a UFC debut at LW and fought GSP……at first it was a pointless dream…..now I want to see that too.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:54 am
sounds to me that silva is runnin scared of GSP!
i want to see bisping an silva and im sure i will get my wish when he walks throw leban
July 24th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I SECOND THAT ONE JOHNBOY….
July 24th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
All of these fights are WAY off in the future anyway, so much can happen before then. As far as skills go, anyone can win on any given day for the most part, things happen so fast in the ring (as well as outside) thant can totally change a fight. But to the guy that mentioned Faber, I think if Frankie Edgar dropped down to 145 a fight between those two would be amazing. My money would be on Edgar though.
July 24th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Oy “Chris”, show Bisping some respect. Do you walk into the Octagon for a living? Guess not. If you do then fight him yourself.
These guys deserve respect and regardless who he has fought the last 2 times he absolutely destroyed them. Its the old cliche but you can only beat the guy in front of you.
July 24th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
By the way the rest of you have made some great calls:
Iceman versus Spider would be awesome - I never even considered that matchup. Good call!
Axe murder versus Spider - thought this was on the cards anyway with talks about Vanderleigh dropping down. REALLY wana see this fight as well.
Agree with what you guys said about GSP. He was the first guy who made Matt Hughes look ordinary. This guy will be a legend, but we need a bit more time before he fights anderson. I believe that would be a very special fight indeed. F*ck it, think I would even have to fly across to the US to see that one! (not dissing the US - but just saying that it would be expensive!).
July 24th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
IF GSP got Silva to the ground, how else could it end but a GSP victory? Thoughts?
July 24th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Okay, first of all Silva has been riding an easy streak defending his title against nobodys, i mean he was losing against lutter, and the was the most bs stop i have seen, the elbows were coming to the back of the head. Bisping sucks and got his ass kicked by hamill, and GSP has been relentless as he has always fought top opponents and looked excellent, trigg, hughes, kos, miller, penn, everybody needs to stop boosting silva saying he will dominate when GSP has faced way tougher opponents, plus Fedor right now is hands the best fighter in the world, his record and opponents prove it
July 24th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
#52:
Seeing as Silva has world class jits, it could end in GSP being submitted. GSP has great sub defense, you have to give him that, but look at how ineffective Hendo was in administering damage to Silva when he was on top of him for the better part of a round.
If GSP got Silva down, Silva would most likely neutralize him until they got stood up. Then he would KO him.
I think GSP is the most well rounded martial artist in the game, but Anderson is a far more deadly striker, and his jits is at least as good or better than GSP’s. GSP has better wrestling, sure, but the Hendo fight showed that a big wrestling advantage isn’t enough to stop AS from going to town on you.
Add the fact that Anderson is much taller than GSP and you have too much to overcome. GSP is great, but Anderson would wreck him. Bad match up for Rush any way you look at him.
Anderson I think is more in far more danger of losing to a one punch counter striking KO artist like Chuck. And it wouldn’t hurt that Chuck is at least his size, if not bigger.
July 24th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
KOuch, TUF canada vs usa = $$$$$$$ for dana, and excitement to us, lets keep talking and it will happen, and i encourage everyone to express every opinion about a fight they have because you never know, joe silva coule be reading all of our comments on here and other sites to get some feedback from us, lets just hope he is because we all think of some excellent exciting wild matchups!
July 25th, 2008 at 2:38 am
hmmmmmmm thats funny how they wanted to do a fight with james irvin but not GSP,i think sliva does not want that fight to happen.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:55 am
Seeing as how GSP was KO’d by Matt Serra only 3 fights ago, I don’t think they are particularly worried about him.
GSP is awesome, but due to the natural size disparity he does not pose much of a threat to Silva.
I don’t think Anderson Silva is afraid to fight anyone, including Fedor, which is a more likely match up to actually occur.
GSP would need to clean out 170 to make a compelling case for Anderson, and there’s a guy named BJ Penn who could seriously derail any further talk about GSP facing AS. But first things first, let’s see how Georges handles Fitch. If he absolutely dominates him, well then the speculation about 185 for Rush can continue.
July 25th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
FEDOR/ANDERSON WILL NEVER HAPPEN… SORRY REVJAMES BUT YOUR WRONG MAN. GSP CANT GIVE ANDERSON A FIGHT AND RUN WITH THE DECISION.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
SORRY I MEANT TO SAY GSP CAN GIVE ANDERSON A FIGHT AND COULD RUNAWAY WITH THE DECISION
July 25th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
