By: Kris Karkoski | Aug 14, 2008

Renato Babalu SobralFormer UFC light heavyweight challenger Renato “Babalu” Sobrall will take on Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth at Strikeforce at the Mansion 2 on September 20th, according to MMA Junkie.

According to the report Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson and Billy Evangelista will also be in action at the event, though opponents have not yet been determined for either fighter.

Joe Riggs vs. Kazuo Misaki has also been officially confirmed for the September card.

Southworth has won three of his last four including a successful title defense over Anthony Ruiz in June.

    Babalu wil own

Babalu by complete annihilation. This will probably be similar to A. Silva/J. Irvin. I guess Babalu needs someone to beat up until Tito’s contract with Affliction comes through.

isn’t that dude the @$$hole that was koshcheks cheerleader in TUF 1? He’s a champ? what kind of organization is he in if he’s the champ?? Babalu is going to end his life!

  • kouch said:

Southworth is so F-ing boring to watch. I saw him in San Jose, CA for his last fight and wanted to shoot myself to end my misery. Babalu should beat the life out of him no problem. No excuses or reason not too. Southworth should feel priveledged to even fight a fighter of Babalu’s status.

Southworth fights for Strikeforce. I thought Babalu was fighting Tito in Affliction…..who is Tito suppose to fight?

  • UFC fan said:

idk i though babalu was gonna fight tito and beat him…

  • kouch said:

I just read below that Tito is being Tito…..that explains everything.

  • The Rob said:

how does affliction work? are all their fighters just contracted to them? Seeing how Fedor is injured and babalu and tito are’t fighting on their next ppv, maybe affliction is one and out?

  • kouch said:

    Rob,

I’m not sure but as of now Affliction sure seems like a one hit wonder.

didnt Babalo lose to Lambert by ko? so i would say that Bobby has a punchers chance yet he doesnt throw devastating punches, soo Babalo by sub (triangle) 2nd round, would have been nice to see him face Tito @ the next Affliction card though

  • The Gunslinger said:

    babalu by whatever he wants!

  • Tspence said:

exactly! im a big babalu fan, whatever he wants is exactly how it ends!! hes gonna play with him for a while and make sure hes good and bloody before he ends it

  • muaythai4life said:

Babalu lost to lambert after he burnt himself out going for a couple submissions in round 1. I say babalu destroys southworth. Bobby has a hard time making the LHW limit anyhow so he tends to gas early on.

  • The Gunslinger said:

i used to like babalu but ever since he wouldnt release his choke hold i havent been very fond of him…i think he is a jerk ever since then….i actually wouldnt mind seeing southworth knock him out

  • ALL_VICTIM said:

Babalu will win the fight if he can keep it on the ground

  • natedogg77 said:

Southworth is a punk! I hated him on TUF. Babalu will destroy him.

  • timcat said:

Bobalu is a beast. So what he didn’t release the choke in time. BJ Penn did the same thing to Jens Pulver yet he wasn’t fired. Another case of the UFC having double standards when it comes to their fighters. Bobalu destroys Southworth, 1st round choke!

    The Rob;

They signed non exclusive deals with Affliction, which means they can fight anywhere they want to.

  • Dannyboy said:

God is this even a fight? Bobby “DAGGER!!!!” Southworth is about as worthless as they come.

  • The Gunslinger said:

    timcat,

bj didnt hold it for that long..he was just caught up in the fight…they had to peel babalu apart from his choke

  • Planck16 said:

You cannot compare Penn and Bobalu’s chokes. Bobalu held on until Heath was sleeping, lights out, waking up in La-La land. Steve Mazzagoti had to physically try to break it up. Penn had Pulver’s back and gave one last squeeze after Pulver tapped, not hold on until the guy was asleep. That is the difference. Both are in the wrong, but the end is totally different.

Bobby Southworth isn’t the ‘dagger’ guy. That was from like season 5 or something. maybe 3? I dunno. Anyhow different guy.

As far as the choke not getting released, I think the difference is that whne Babalu didn’t release his he was forced to (like Penn) and then he got up and didn’t he spit on the ground at the guy? or at very least glare very meanly at him? lol but serious babalu screwed himself there.. plus… he did lose to lambert.

I try and watch a lot of UFC but I have never seen this choke by Babalu. Which event was it? Did you guys say that this was against Heath Herring?

Got to agree with the comments above, not a fan of Bobby Southworth from TUF. Disrespectful and arrogant.
Look at GSP and Anderson. The best champs around and they are as respectful as they come.
THAT IS WHAT OUR SPORT IS ALL ABOUT IMO.

By the way guys do you think anybody will be able to stop Brock Lesnar from being a future UFC champ? He’s another disrespectful person that I think our sport does not need (the way he was pointing & laughing at Heath Herring at the end of the fight showed to me a pretty flawed character).
He is the real deal though. He obviously learns quickly as his defense against the Kamora was immediate.
Interested to know what you think.

    Animal,

I saw Southworth in his last fight and will say this, he was very respectful to his opponent after the match and told the crowd to cheer for the guy. It’s the TUF show incidet with Southworth/Kos turning the hose on Leben after Leben went outside to let everything go that made me hate Southworth and Kos. Southworth and Kos acted gay as hell on season 1.

  • animal said:

Scratch that, just read the article properly.
Thats pretty f*cked up not to release a choke. Do that for 20-30 seconds and thats murder bro.

  • animal said:

Fair play KOuch. Suppose telivision etc can be misleading. Whats your opinion on Brock?

  • animal said:

Yeah that whole incident with Leben made me dislike Southworth as well. The whole “fatherless b*stard” comment was pretty cruel.. and also pretty stupid considering that the definition of a bastard is not to have a father!!

Then again Chris saying that he would not feel bad about crippling Koscheck is pretty bad as well.

I probably wasn’t very clear; when I talk about respect I also mean a whole person’s attitude outside the ring as well.

  • kouch said:

    Animal,

You fatherless guy without a father. I forgot to mention Southworth’s fight was so boring I felt suicidal. It was a great time for a bathroom/beer break but I chose not to exercise that option and suffered for 30 minutes. Leben also pissed on that guys bed which was pretty f-n nasty. JT Money ain’t got **** on that one. I’d like to see Leben/Kos again in about a year or so. They’ve both improved but I think Kos is still better…..even though I’d love Leben to knock him the F out

  • kouch said:

Brock is cool man. He is all powerful and stuff…..I really think he will be champ one day. His strength is undescribeable. His speed for his size is insane. His Incredible Hulk style punching is beautiful and violent. There is something about athletes with abnormal power or speed that always makes them so special to whatever sport they play. Sorta like 12yr old Chinese Olympians.

  • animal said:

    KOuch

Fair play. Think I just never liked the whole Goliath thing. Always would back a david who had some badass preying mantis style and a point to prove.
I am british afterall, and we like the underdog..
