Steve Cantwell Drops to Middleweight to Face Mike Massenzio at UFC 136

After three straight losses, former WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell has decided to drop to middleweight and will face Mike Massenzio at UFC 136, UFC officials announced on Monday.

Cantwell returned from a long layoff in March, losing to French striker Cyrille Diabate at UFC on Versus 3. The 24-year-old Cantwell will likely be fighting for his UFC career at the October 6 event in Houston, Texas.

Massenzio comes to UFC 136 in need of a win as well, as his elite grappling ability has not translated to success in the UFC to this point in his career. With a 1-3 record in the promotion, Massenzio will also likely be fighting for his job against Cantwell.

UFC 136 will be headlined by a pair of title fights, as lightweight champion Frankie Edgar meets Gray Maynard in a rematch of their “Fight of the Year” candidate and Kenny Florian challenges featherweight champ Jose Aldo. The card also features the return of controversial middleweight Chael Sonnen against Brian Stann in a fight that will likely determine the number one middleweight contender.
