UFC 134 kicked off tonight in Rio de Janiero, Brazil with five preliminary fights streaming on Facebook featuring wins by Paulo Thiago, Raphael Assuncao, Erick Silva, Yuri Alcantara, and Yves Jabouin.
And if the crowd was any indication, the UFC 134 main event featuring UFC middlweight champion Anderson Silva may register on a Richter Scale. Check out MMAFrenzy.com’s live coverage of UFC 134 by clicking here, including Silva’s main event rematch with challenger Yushin Okami.
BOPE veteran Paulo Thiago excites crowd and controls David Mitchell
David Mitchell’s stand-up looked improved early, but Paulo Thiago managed to neutralize the advantage with superior grappling through out the fight. Thiago showed a strong takedown game, but Mitchell managed to frustrate the Brazilian for the most part by utilizing an active guard. While Thiago’s chin was often left wide open in exchanges, Mitchell was never able to take advantage as he took too much time loading up. Thiago closed out the fight by nearly securing a rear naked choke that brought the Brazilian fans to their feet before earning unanimous 30-27 scores from the judges.
Rafael Assuncao negates the striking of Johnny Eduardo
Brazilian Muay Thai champion Johnny Eduardo showed his skill set in his fight tonight against WEC veteran Raphael Assuncao, but it was not enough as Assuncao tapped his strong grappling background and had Eduardo in trouble in the second. The final round was more of the same as Assuncao dominated on the ground and managed to avoid Eduardo’s power strikes en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Erick Silva demolishes Luis Ramos in UFC debut
Jungle Fight champion Erick Silva took only forty seconds to announce his arrival to the UFC. The fighter resembled his rather famous training partner, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, with a vicious overhand right that floored Luis Ramos. Ramos tried to recover but referee Herb Dean stopped the fight after several unanswered strikes.
Yuri Alcantrara defeats Felipe Arantes
Experience played a huge factor in Yuri Alcantara vs. Felipe Arante, as Arantes was aggressive early at the expense of his takedown defense and Alcantara was smart enough to take advantage with smart takedowns to earn a unanimous decision win.
Yves Jabouin demonstrates superior striking to defeat Eddie Loveland
Yves Jabouin looked excellent in his bantamweight debut tonight overcoming early takedowns in both the first and second rounds. Jabouin mixed in an impressive variety of kicks and punches, while scoring a few takedowns of his own. The third round slowed as Loveland was visibly exhausted, likely due to several spining kicks to the body by Jabouin which helped earn him a unanimous decision from the judges.
