Roy Nelson is bringing a lot more to the octagon this time around. With how often his physique is critiqued, one would assume that would be the talk of the town concerning his upcoming fight on Saturday. However, Nelson is sporting a very rugged, yet absolutely impressive beard.
Nelson knows that no matter what he does inside the cage, though, that critiquing will happen, and he is okay with that.
“The one thing I’ve learned with once you’ve become a celebrity, is people concentrate on three things: your appearance, who you’re sleeping with, or how much money you make,” Nelson told MMAFrenzy.com. “With the way I look, that’s what everyone wants to focus on.”
Even with that focus, Nelson has had an impressive MMA career, winning the IFL Heavyweight Championship and The Ultimate Fighter 10.
That brings him to this Saturday at UFC 137, where he is fighting PRIDE legend Mirko Cro Cop.
Cro Cop and Nelson are both looking to revive their careers having lost their last two fights. Even with that streak, Nelson does not look at it as a negative. In fact, Nelson has heard more about Cro Cop and his streak, along with his intentions following the match, rather than his own.
“From what I’ve heard, he’s not looking to retire,” said Nelson. “I think everyone else is trying to put that retirement stamp on him, but that is usually the scariest thing. If people are telling him to retire, he’s going to be the guy looking to tell everyone to back off.”
In his first three fights in the UFC, Nelson fought up and coming contenders Brendan Schaub, Stefan Struve, and Junior Dos Santos. He then fought former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir, and is now fighting Cro Cop.
But Nelson stated he does not have a preference in fighting contenders or legends, stating he only wants to fight the best.
“As an athlete, I just want to fight the best in the world. If you get a chance to fight a legend, it’s definitely one of those things you want to have on your resume. I actually fought a guy that is a legend in the sport.”
“For me, I like fighting guys that are at the top of the game. I don’t want the guys that have the black picture at the UFC website.”
