NBCSports.com reported the bout over the weekend.
The bout will be Franca’s first since being suspended for one year by the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for steroids following a loss to then-champion Sean Sherk at UFC 73 last July. Franca was cut from the UFC at his request but he has since re-signed with the promotion. Prior to the July loss, Franca had won eight-straight bouts including three-straight UFC victories over Joe Jordan, Jamie Varner, and Spencer Fisher as well as a WEC win over “The Ultimate Fighter 5” winner Nate Diaz.
Edgar, a collegiate wrestler at Clarion University, suffered his first professional loss in April at UFC Fight Night 13, losing via unanimous decision to Gray Maynard. Prior to the defeat he had won eight-straight bouts including UFC wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek, and Spencer Fisher.
UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy” takes place at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday, August 9th, and airs on pay-per-view. In the main event welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre takes on top-contender Jon Fitch. In other featured bouts lightweights Kenny Floran and Roger Huerta will clash for a 155-pound title shot and Brock Lesnar will look to notch his first win inside the octagon against Heath Herring.
