The UFC revealed today that verbal agreements are in place for a lightweight tilt between the chronically unfunny Jacob Volkmann and England’s resident triangle master Paul Sass, with the fight targeted for UFC 146 this May.
31-year-old Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann (14-2) made his UFC debut in 2009 as a welterweight, losing that and one other contest in the division before dropping to lightweight. Since doing so, Volkmann has strung together five straight decision victories, including wins over the likes of Paul Kelly, Antonio McKee and Danny Castillo. His most recent performance resulted in a unanimous judges’ ruling in his favor over The Ultimate Fighter season 8 winner Efrain Escudero at UFC 141 in December.
England’s Paul “Sassangle” Sass (12-0) got his nickname and undefeated record for a reason: he’s secured seven of his twelve professional victories via triangle choke. Like Rousimar Palhares’ leg locks, you may see it coming, but there’s nothing you can do to stop it. The 23-year-old Team Kaobon prospect has only seen one of his professional bouts reach the final bell, the rest having all ended by submission. He most recently appeared in action this past October at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson, submitting a spirited Michael Johnson in the first round with a heel hook.
UFC 146 has yet to be officially announced by the UFC, but is expected to take place on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is likely to feature a main event between UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.
