UFC 147: Silva vs. Sonnen II Facing Delay Due to UN Summit

Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen UFC 117 weigh-inUFC President Dana White revealed that UFC 147 may have to be delayed during the UFC on Fuel TV 2 post-fight press conference. The June 23 event is currently scheduled to be in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The fight card is unfortunately only a day after the United Nations is scheduled to end their massive “United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development” in Rio De Janeiro or Rio+20. While the fight is expected to be huge in the MMA world, it is insignificant in comparison to the Rio+20 conference.

The huge UN conference is already huge burden on hotels, air travel, and security throughout the region. So the addition of one of the biggest MMA cards of the year would be a logistical nightmare for all involved.

Dana White had this to say regarding the matter:

“We’re waiting to hear back [from city officials], we’re trying to figure this whole thing out. The problem is that first of all they don’t like the idea of us coming at the same time as this United Nations convention’s going on, the other problem is hotel rooms. Most of the hotel rooms are being taken up,”

“We don’t think, we know, that the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva fight it’s one of the biggest sporting events this year in the world, so we need to make sure (there’s room) especially when you’re doing an 80,000-seat soccer stadium. There better be some hotel rooms… Hopefully, we’ll get this thing done within the next few days, one way or the other.”

The conference is expected to draw thousands of world leaders, private business executives, NGO leaders and other key world figures. Add in the additional people for the fairs, exhibitions, and side conferences, and you have a massive amount of people that will require most of the region’s resources.
