UFC president Dana White revealed yesterday through Twitter that Silva will be facing off against his fellow Brazilian Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his next outing. The two are rumored to be doing battle on the UFC 149 fight card, which is scheduled for July 21 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Silva (14-3, 1 NC) was coming off a one year suspension for submitting a fake urine sample to beat a drug test when he took on Gustafsson. The 29-year-old was soundly outclassed by the surging Swede, picking up a loss that makes him 0-2 with one no contest in his last three fights. He had sandwiched a win over Brandon Vera in between the losses, but had that win overturned for faking the drug test.
Rua (20-6) last appeared in action taking on Den Henderson in what’s been called one of the greatest fights in MMA history. Shogun ended up on the wrong end of a very close unanimous decision, which puts him at 1-2 in his last three. Prior to the bout with Hendo, Rua lost his title to Jon Jones and knocked out Forrest Griffin.
