UFC 147 was initially scheduled for a stadium in Rio de Janeiro and would have featured the highly-anticipated rematch between UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Conflict with the United Nations’ Rio+20 conference saw the title fight bumped up to UFC 148 and the card’s location change.
Now, UFC 147 is to be headlined by a middleweight match up between Brazilian MMA icons Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. The two seasoned vets fought each other at UFC Brazil in 1998, with Belfort earning a quick TKO win over Silva that’s been immortalized in highlight videos since. The two fighters recently coached opposing teams on the first international edition of The Ultimate Fighter, TUF: Brazil.
The last episode of the previously taped show will air a week before UFC 147, with the show’s finals matches also set to take place at the event. A heavyweight match up between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow is also expected for the card, which is scheduled to take place on June 23.
