Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire Featherweight Title Bout set for Bellator 73

A featherweight title fight between champion Pat Curran and Patricio Freire has been set for Bellator 73 on August 24. Bellator announced the match up Friday evening.

Pat Curran is coming off a devastating knockout of Joe Warren to earn the featherweight belt at Bellator 60. Curran is looking to extend his winning streak to five with a win over Freire. Curran has gone undefeated since dropping to featherweight after a losing a five round championship fight with former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

Finally healed from injury, Patricio “Pitbull” Freire is looking to make the most of the title shot he earned by winning the Season 4 featherweight tournament crown. Freire is one of the most explosive fighters in all of MMA with vicious hands and strong submissions. Freire is 17-1, with the lone loss coming by way of a controversial split decision loss to former champion Joe Warren.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said of the bout:

“This will be an offensive clinic between two devastating finishers,” Rebney said. “Both Pat Curran and Patricio Pitbull can finish with relentless strikes or vicious submissions. This is a fight between two of the best Featherweights in MMA and will be a title fight to remember.”
