MMAFrenzy’s coverage of UFC 146 rolls along with a recap of tonight’s preliminary fights on FX. Fighters Dan Hardy, CB Dollaway, Jaime Varner, and Darren Elkins were all victorious on tonight’s card. Be sure to stay tuned to MMAFrenzy as our coverage of UFC 146 continues.
Elkins Edges Brandao
TUF 14 Champion Diego Brandao and Darren Elkins had a very tough three-round fight. Brandao battered Elkins in the first round, while Elkins dominated round 2. The third round saw Elkins again take Brandao to the mat and control the first two-thirds of the round before being swept by Brandao after a guillotine choke attempt by Elkins. Brandao tried to rain down strikes but despite landing some powerful blows, Elkins managed to keep from losing the round.
Varner Stuns Barboza
Former WEC champion Jamie Varner stunned rising prospect Edson Barboza in their bout at UFC 146. Varner, who took the fight on short notice, took some damage via some nasty Barboza legkicks but used those kicks to time his opponent. Varner used that timing to score a takedown on a caught kick but really used it well later in the round. Varner countered Barboza with vicious boxing that put Barboza on the retreat before Varner dropped him with stiff punch.
Varner quickly pounced and finished Barboza on the ground with strikes. Barboza was furious with the stoppage, but he was unable to rotate into a defensible position. While Varner was holding the cage at the end of the fight, referee Steve Mazzagati likely missed it with Barboza taking a lot of damage and his number one priority being fighter safety.
Dollaway Smothers Miller
CB Dollaway controlled Jason “Mayhem” Miller for three rounds to pick a unanimous decision victory. A clearly injured Miller had his moments in the first and second rounds as he rocked Dollaway with big punches but he was unable to follow up and finish before being taken down. The majority of the fight was an ugly affair as Dollaway ground out a decision on top as Miller was unable to brace on his injured leg.
No word on whether Miller will follow through on his promise to retire if he lost to Dollaway as of this post.
Hardy Bounces Back Against Ludwig
Dan Hardy finally got off a four-fight losing streak with a big knockout win over Duane Ludwig. The win was Hardy’s first since winning against Mike Swick at UFC 105. Hardy and Ludwig both came to fight, with both fighters landing big shots early and often on each other. Eventually, Hardy set up a brilliant left hook with a quick feint that felled Ludwig hard. Hardy almost celebrated too early before quickly pouncing and finishing with elbow strikes.
