Shortly after the lightweight match up between Ryan Couture and Joe Duarte was announced for Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy, Strikeforce officials announced another 155lbs contest for the event between Jorge Masvidal and Justin Wilcox.
Masvidal (22-7) is fresh off of making a bid for Gilbert Melendez’s lightweight title and ending up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision. The American Top Team representative was on a two-fight winning streak prior to that bout, having defeated both Billy Evangelista and KJ Noons. His bout against Melendez went down last December at Strikeforce 39.
Wilcox (11-4, 1 NC) also made his last appearance at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal, where he suffered a quick knockout to Caros Fodor; a No Contest against Gesias Cavalcante preceded that bout. Against Masvidal, Wilcox will be looking to regain the momentum he generated before those two fights by amassing a six-fight winning streak.
Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy will take place on July 14 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold will attempt to defend his title for the second time, against Tim Kennedy. Nate Marquardt and Tyron Woodley will also meet on the card to dispute the promotion’s vacant welterweight title.
