Former Olympic hopeful Shawn Bunch has decided to move from the mat to the cage after losing out on a spot on the US Olympic team. Bunch, who was the favorite to represent the US in London, lost to former Oklahoma State Cowboy Coleman Scott at the “Beat the Streets” event in Times Square. MMAFighting first announced the move yesterday that Bellator officials confirmed earlier today.
Bunch is an extremely talented freestyle wrestler and he will make his professional and Bellator debut at bantamweight this fall. Bunch will have to fight a few fights before joining a bantamweight tournament field.
Bunch is the latest signing in Bellator’s trend of finding world class martial artists that are relatively new to MMA but can thrive under a tournament format. Bellator will hope that Bunch can equal or exceed fellow Edinboro All-American and former AKA product Josh Koscheck.
