After more than decade away from Japan, the UFC’s return to the land of PRIDE, UFC 144: Edgar vs Henderson drew a strong showing with a live attendance of around 20,000 filling the Saitama Super Arena this past February.
The promotion was so happy with their Japanese outing that it seems they are already planning a return to the Saitama Super Arena according to NikkanSports.com. The rumor currently circulating is that March 3 is the projected date for their second Japanese event under the Zuffa era.
While Japanese MMA has certainly suffered a great deal over the years, with events like Sengoku and DREAM falling by the wayside, the UFC has made Japan a focal point in their continued global expansion. Despite being considered a “passion project” at first, the promotion shows continued interest in a slow, steady expansion into the land of the rising sun.
