Rumors have surfaced on the “Savage Dog Show” from Sherdog as well as other sources that indicate Martin Kampmann (3-0 UFC) has been injured and forced to withdraw from his UFC 72 main event fight with Rich Franklin (8-1 UFC). There has been no official comments on the report likely because the UFC is looking for a suitable replacement. The vague reports haven’t mentioned any specific injury, although it appears to be significant enough to force the Dutch fighter to withdraw from his first main event tilt.
There have been several names being thrown around as possible replacements including Mike Swick (5-1 UFC) and Yushin Okami (4-0 UFC). Interestingly, Okami topped Swick at UFC 69 in a unanimous decision. On one hand a fight with Swick would be great for the event which is currently lacking big name draws which Swick would provide but from a pure title contention perspective an Okami vs. Franklin fight would make the most sense.
A lot of different factors are sure to impact the UFC’s decision. Okami is a relative no-name to most UFC fans and with the event already devoid of talent Okami wouldn’t help the UFC build hype about the event. Swick on the other hand has publicly said he is likely going to drop to welterweight to fight more even competition. To top it off, Franklin is already rumored to be facing Anderson Silva at UFC 76 in Cincinnati in October.
More should be known on the developing situation soon and I’ll be sure to pass it along as soon as I get word.
