Swedish kickboxer Jorgen Kruth has abruptly retired ahead of his “UFC on FUEL TV 5” bout with Fabio Maldonado (pictured). The Brazilian fighter is now expected to meet Cyrille Diabate at UFC 154. MMAJunkie first reported the switch.
Kruth, who has over 85 professional kickboxing bouts, told Swedish site Expressen that the wear and tear from his long career has prevented him from being able to train at a high level. The mounting injuries have also lead to a decrease in motivation, which is what led the Swedish striker to hang it up.
His former opponent, Fabio Maldonado, will now likely be fighting for his career at UFC 154. The Brazilian boxer will now take on French kickboxer Cyrille Diabate in Montreal.
Maldonado has dropped his last two bouts after knocking out James McSweeny in his UFC debut. Diabate will be looking for his first UFC win-streak after defeating Tom DeBlass.
UFC 154 takes place November 17 in Montreal, Quebec. The headlining bout will be a UFC welterweight title unification bout between champion Georges St-Pierre and interim champion Carlos Condit. The card will take place at the Bell Centre.
