The Ultimate Fighter 16 – Episode 1: Opening Round Fights and Team Selection

The Ultimate Fighter 16 debuted tonight live on FX. Tonight’s card featured 16 fights as the original cast of 32 fighters was whittled down to 16 house members.

The fights took place at the Mandalay Bay Event Center and the action got started early with four straight finishes. Bellator veteran Sam Alvey turned a few heads with an absolutely devastating knockout in the final fight.

UFC President Dana White announced before team selections that each finish this season will net a fighter $5,000. With the fans selecting a “Fight of the Season,” “KO of the Season,” and a “Submission of the Season” for a $25,ooo bonus. White also chastised several fighters who he did not believe showed him much in the opening round.
The UFC President then did the coin toss to decide who received the choice of first pick and first fight selection. Roy Nelson won the toss and elected to pick the first fight, with Shane Carwin picking the first fighter. White makes a point at the end of the broadcast to point out that he believes Carwin’s team is bigger and that they were more impressive the day before.
