Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez revealed some details as to what the exact injury that took place, keeping him out of this weekend’s event, and forcing the card’s cancellation was. It would appear that “El Niño” suffered a shoulder injury while wrestling with former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields.
I was training hard and Jake Shields and I were battling on a takedown and I didn’t want to give it up. I landed hard on my shoulder and ended up separating my shoulder.
While Melendez has no official timeline for his period on convalescence, he expects that if all goes according to plan, he can avoid surgery and will return to training in six weeks.
…maybe I reevaluate in two more weeks and start making decisions like that. But I’m hoping about five weeks before I start training hard. I feel better rapidly every day, it was just bad timing.
