Former champion Tim Sylvia (8-3 UFC) will face another former heavyweight champion Frank Mir (7-3 UFC) at UFC 74 in August. The event is headlined by a heavyweight title tilt between Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Sylvia was the UFC heavyweight champion until he met Randy Couture who exited retirement for the match. Couture won the match with a dominant unanimous decision although news surfaced following the bout that Sylvia was injured. He is currently rehabbing after undergoing back surgery. Among his notable wins are two victories over Andrei Arlovski and a title defense against Jeff Monson.
Mir technically never lost the UFC Heavyweight title. Rather, the title was put up for grabs between Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski after Mir was in a very serious motorcycle accident keeping him out of the UFC for more than a year and a half. Since his return Mir in just 1-2 posting a win over Dan Christison and losses to Brandon Vera and Marcio Cruz.
Before he was sidelined with the injruies from the wreck Mir won the heavyweight title from then champion…Tim Sylvia. In their first meeting for the heavyweight title mir won very quickly with an armbar submission just :50 seconds into the very first round.
