Melendez Won’t Need Surgery, January Return Uncertain

Gilbert MelendezIt would seem that the AC tear suffered by Gilbert Melendez, which caused the cancellation of Strikeforce’s September 29 event, will not require surgery. The lightweight champion, however, remains uncertain as to when exactly he can return to action.

When asked by MMAJunkie if he would be a part of the promotion’s mid-January card, the Cesar Gracie protege responded, “There’s no definite yes. We’ll know in mid-November.”

“El NiƱo” was expected to face Pat Healy at the ill-fated September event, but the champion’s injury coupled with a lackluster undercard saw Showtime cancel the card in its entirety. While it remains uncertain as to whether or not Melendez can return by the next promotional offering, his opponent is willing to wait and welcome the champion back to the cage.
