The UFC has revealed that Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman have tested positive for banned substances following UFC 153. The UFC VP of Regulatory Affairs, Marc Ratner, will handle the suspensions in the absence of an athletic commission. The positive tests are the second positive tests for each fighter. MMAJunkie first reported the positive tests.
Bonnar, who has since retired from MMA, tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid Drostanolone. Bonnar tested positive for another anabolic steroid Boldenone following UFC 62 and was suspended nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Bonnar immediately admitted to taking the drug in an effort to bounce back from an elbow injury.
Dave Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his UFC 153 loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Herman also tested positive for marijuana metabolites prior to UFC 136. At the time, Herman maintained he never smoked marijuana.
In the absence an athletic commission, which happens often at international events, the UFC runs the regulation of the events. It is unclear how the UFC will handle the suspensions at this time.
